Historically, people have fished to feed themselves, their families, and their communities. But fishing can also be a great recreational activity and a fun way to enjoy Chesapeake Bay. Saltwater game fishes found in the Bay include striped bass (rockfish), red drum, cobia, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, and flounder. VIMS graduate student Willy Goldsmith will explain how he is using pop-up satellite tags to track and monitor survival rates of open-ocean fishes such as tunas and billfishes after catch-and-release fishing, and what his findings mean for recreational fisheries.
