Channeled whelk, Busycotypus canaliculatus, are marine snails with a fascinating life history including slow growth, late maturation, and direct development of their young. The biological characteristics of channeled whelk make them vulnerable to over harvest, which can lead to negative impacts on the long-term sustainability of the channeled whelk commercial fishery. In addition, management is inconsistent; adjacent states have different harvest regulations, and some states have no regulations at all. Ms. Samantha Askin, graduate student at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, uses genetic methods to understand the population structure of channeled whelk with the goal of providing information that can be used to address the impact of current fisheries management actions on the channeled whelk resource.
