Though the practice of biblical interpretation is today synonymous with rabbinic Judaism, like any cultural practice it emerged at a particular historical moment and had to establish itself over potential rivals. In this presentation, I will examine the complex relations between scriptural interpretation and other, competing models of religious authority, first and foremost that of oral-traditional transmission.

Azzan Yadin-Israel is Professor of Jewish Studies at Rutgers University and has developed a research focus on a key aspect of my course on the rabbis and church father, early rabbinic hermeneutics—specifically, legal (mishnaic) and narrative (midrashic) interpretation among the Tannaim.  Has written two monographs on figures associated with this period of rabbinic reflection, both with University of Pennsylvania Press: Scripture as Logos: Rabbi Ishmael and the Origins of Midrash (2004) and Scripture and Tradition: Rabbi Akiva and the Triumph of Midrash (2015).
