[PAST EVENT] Sustainable Food Systems Summer Series

June 26, 2011 - July 21, 2011
Location
Various locations in the area
We'll take a closer look at the importance of food in our communities, how it impacts people and the environment and ways we can get involved.

Schedule

Sunday, June 26 - Taking Root Farm Tour, 1 to 5 p.m.
Start getting familiar with agriculture by visiting three local farms: Thompson's Border Collies, Sheep & Goats, Old Church Sod & Shiokan Farm and Kuhn's Dominion Rescue Animal Farm. This is a self-driving tour and you can find more details here: {{http://jccwmg.org/farmtour2011.htm}}.

Wednesday, July 6 - Campus Gardens
Help our campus with its sustainability initiatives by volunteering in the campus gardens. This garden produces locally grown produce that is used by the cafeteria. We'll be working so wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty! Meet us on the Sadler Terrace at 5 p.m.

Saturday, July 9 - Williamsburg Farmer's Market
Meet at the Lord Botetourt statue at 9:30 a.m. to walk over to the Farmer's Market, meet the Market Manager, learn about the vendors and get a tour. Bring money if you want to buy anything!

Wednesday, July 13 - South of the Ferry Farm
Journey with us across the river to South of the Ferry Farm as we meet with the owners to learn about organic farming and volunteer on a project that benefits the community. Meet in front of Blow Memorial Hall at 3:30 p.m. and we'll drive together.

Monday, July 18 - 3:45-6 p.m. - Campus Kitchens
Come cook with us at a Campus Kitchens shift! We'll spend the first few minutes learning how Campus Kitchens runs as a sustainable food system and then we'll jump right into helping them with one of their weekly shifts. Meet at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church (right across the street from Monroe Hall). The entrance is the main back door that faces the church parking lot.

Thursday, July 21 - 6:30 p.m. - Movie Night
We're watching Fresh! This movie WILL help you to think in new ways about what you're eating while giving you a new vision for how things could change. Meet us in Blow Hall's 3rd Floor Lounge. Bring your local fruit and we'll make the smoothies!
