[PAST EVENT] John Addington Symonds: A "rich mine of psychological curiosities"

May 23, 2013
6pm - 8pm
Location
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Choate Room, 1779 Massachusetts Ave., NW, Washington, D.C.
"I'm introducing the audience to John Addington Symonds (1840-1893), a contemporary of Oscar Wilde and Walt Whitman and one of the first to investigate the history of homosexuality. I focus on a recently discovered letter that he wrote to Richard von Krafft-Ebing, the Viennese psychiatrist/sexologist, in which he reveals the contradictory and painful plight of gay men in society. It's a fascinating text that rings true to this day."

Reception from 6-6:45 p.m.
