While attending a summer acting class in the Community Center of the fictional town of Shirley, Vt., three strangers and one couple discover the difficulties of communicating. Marty, the class' instructor, leads her students through a variety of improv games in an attempt to teach them how to relate to one another. With the class ranging from a 16 year- old aspiring actress to a middle-aged divorced carpenter, the class exercises force the students to establish relationships, but as new ones form, old ones crumble, and even Marty has to learn that allowing open dialogue not only brings personal insights, but also pain.
