[PAST EVENT] W&M Richmond Veterans Day Service Outing

The Richmond alumni network will lead a great Veterans Day volunteer opportunity at the Petersburg National Park. The mission of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park is "to commemorate the 9.5-month siege of Petersburg and to educate the public about the significance of the siege as it relates to the Civil War. The park not only focuses on military action but also the people; soldier and civilian, free and enslaved who were impacted by the siege."

During the day duties for volunteers will include:

  • Identify and remove vegetation overgrowth and invasive species from earthworks.
  • Use basic equipment, such as shears, root clippers, rakes, soil aerators, and shovels.
  • Apply erosion treatments such as grass seed, jute netting, and hay to earthworks.
  • Follow instructions, be cautious and respectful to both the land and staff.
