Silent Dinners are an opportunity for club and community members to come together and practice their signing skills in a casual, organic setting with people who are all learning together. The dinners are also an opportunity for members to experience an aspect of Deaf culture: meals with hearing people are difficult as hearing people talk over and interrupt each other, talk with food in their mouths which disrupts lip reading, and generally leave Deaf and Hard of Hearing people out of conversations. Silent Dinners create a space to raise awareness and practice accessibility for the Deaf community.
