7pm - 9pm
Location
Sadler Center Chesapeake ABC

The Sankofa Gala is a special yearly event created to honor and provide a welcoming space for black students, faculty, and staff. Attendees are invited to dress in their best attire for an elegant evening celebrating the essence of Sankofa. The Gala will feature musical entertainment, free food, an awards ceremony, and the showcasing of many talents that students and staff have to offer. The atmosphere is carefully designed to exude elegance, fostering an environment that encourages appreciation for shared culture and history.

Sankofa, originating from Ghana's Twi and Fante languages, means "to go back and get it." The Gala embodies this theme, inviting participants to reflect on general African American history, especially the stories of enslaved and free African Americans at William and Mary. At the Gala, we embrace the spirit of Sankofa, turning the act of looking back into a deliberate and transformative gesture. It's a moment of intentional reflection, exploring the rich tapestry of the past. Through this shared reflection, we aim to move forward with a deep understanding of our history.

The Sankofa Gala is more than just an event; it's a celebration of resilience, a commitment to growth, and a meaningful commemoration of African American history. As we come together in grandeur, we leave inspired to live, create, and carry forward the cherished and resilient legacy of our history. We are excited to see you all there!
