Prepare to be inspired and captivated by native Hawaiian navigators Nainoa Thompson and Lehua Kamalu during this special event.

  • Nainoa Thompson, CEO of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, inaugural Scholar in Ocean Residency at William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences at VIMS
  • Lehua Kamalu, PVS Voyaging Director and the first woman to lead navigate and captain a traditional voyaging canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti using only the stars and signs in nature

Thompson and Kamalu will share the Hawaiian concept of "mālama" – care taking – while inspiring and educating participants to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world with a melding of scientific understanding and Indigenous wisdom in the ongoing Moananuiākea Voyage for the Earth.

Thompson is CEO of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and inaugural Scholar in Ocean Residency at William & Mary’s Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences at VIMS. He is known around the world as a leader in the traditional Polynesian art of non-instrumented navigation and for his canoe voyages throughout the global ocean guided only by stars, waves, winds, and marine life. Lehua Kamalu is Voyaging Director of the Polynesian Voyaging Society and the first woman to lead navigate and captain a traditional voyaging canoe from Hawaii to Tahiti using only the stars and signs in nature.
