Richard B. Woodward is the founding curator of the African art collection at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Since 1976, he has guided the development of the collection, which now consists of some 800 works of art. Mr. Woodward is currently overseeing the reinstallation of the collection in new and expanded galleries that will open concurrent with the exhibition, Dynasty and Divinity: Ife Art in Ancient Nigeria, in February 2011.
A staff member of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts since 1975, Mr. Woodward has held senior administrative positions in the museum for more than 30 years. In 2000 he served as Interim Director, and since then as Senior Deputy Director for Architecture and Design, during which time he oversaw the planning and construction of the VMFA?s new 165,000 square foot wing, 4 acre sculpture garden, and 600 car parking deck.
Mr. Woodward earned the BA degree in art history at Rutgers University, where he concentrated on Early Christian, Byzantine, and Medieval Art, and the MA degree in art history from the University of Virginia, where he focused on 19th and 20th century art and wrote his thesis on the subject of Claude Monet?s paintings of waterlilies.
