Since 2002 , the W&M Global Village Project (GVP) has traveled to Central America during Spring Break to help construct houses for local families in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity International. In 2014, the team decided to have a cross-cultural experience in Laredo, Texas, on the US border. The organization's mission has always remained the same: provide a unique opportunity for William and Mary students to help build a home for a family and thereby foster profound cultural exchange and insight through personal interaction with a local community. This project seeks to give students a personal understanding of the effects of disparity through an intimate cultural exchange with local families, as well as by forming new relationships with other GVP members during the fundraising and house-building process. Our goals are to address the needs of the communities we serve and create a genuine connection with, and gain insight into, the lives of those with whom we share the experience of building a home.
