Blue-winged Teal initiate southward migration from their breeding grounds in late summer, displaying a fall migratory pattern unique among North American waterfowl and similar to that of many Neotropical songbirds. Corticosterone, the major avian hormone of stress and energy regulation, is known to influence migratory physiology in songbirds. However, little is known about this response in migratory waterfowl. Dr. Wilson explores how blue-winged teal hormone levels compare to songbirds and what this means for migration.
