Groundwater contributes greater than 75 percent of streamflow on the Delmarva Peninsula and nitrate, the greatest source of nitrogen in many areas, is almost all carried in groundwater. Nitrate concentrations in streams and groundwater of the Virginia part of the Delmarva Peninsula reflect the variable land use and hydrogeologic conditions in the area. Concentrations of nitrate in groundwater are highest beneath upland agricultural areas with sandy soils and sediments and lowest in areas with fine-grained organic-rich soils?especially near shorelines with extensive wetlands. Dr. Judy Denver, US Geological Survey, Dover, DE, has long been engaged with surface and ground water quality studies on the Delmarva, and brings a wealth of experience on the subject.
There is no charge for this presentation. Seating limited to 60 people.
