A unique educational and networking event, the GRS encourages interdisciplinary exchange, bringing together students from the sciences and the humanities at William & Mary and other surrounding regional universities. The GRS promises to be an exciting opportunity to share experiences common to students in all graduate school communities.

The Graduate Research Symposium grew out of, and along with, the American Cultures Conference, an annual event launched in 2002 by William & Mary's American Studies Program. Nurtured by Dr. Hans von Baeyer, Emeritus Chancellor Professor of Physics and former Director of the Graduate Center, the GRS is now overseen by a dedicated group of William & Mary graduate student volunteers and supported by the Dean and staff in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Designed as a conference where graduate students could participate in an interdisciplinary setting to discuss ongoing research in their fields, the GRS has developed into an exceptional forum for presentations, lectures, and workshops, all while preserving the initial focus on the individual and his or her research. In 2012, there are more than 155 poster and oral presentations by graduate students from W&M and 17 regional institutions.
