The Atlantic surf clam (Spisula solidissima) represents an ideal target species for diversification in the Northeast because it is native, grows rapidly, and its growing season complements the region?s established farming framework. Building upon previously conducted surf clam aquaculture research, the Haskin Shellfish Research Lab has tested and evaluated various aspects of surf clam nursery culture, including optimal rearing temperature and nursery gear type. Additionally, we are examining various grow-out techniques, assessing whether heat-tolerance is a heritable trait, and exploring the shelf-life and marketability of farm-raised surf clams. This collaborative research has been possible through partnerships with local shellfish farmers, National Sea Grant, NJ Sea Grant, and NESARE. Presented by Michael Aquafredda, Ph.D. Graduate Student, Rutgers University, NJ.

There is no charge for this presentation. Seating limited to 60 people.
