Aid & Attendance, Pension, and Estate Issues for Veterans
PRESENTER: Helena S. Mock, Esquire, attorney and founder of the Peninsula Center for Estate Planning and Elder Law, Adjunct Professor of Law at the College of William & Mary School of Law, Managing Attorney and Clinical Instructor of the William & Mary Law School's Elder Law Clinic, and a Veteran of the United States Army.
DESCRIPTION OF PRESENTATION:
The first part of this presentation will address what is most commonly known as aid and attendance. Veterans deserve special care and attention. Our government acknowledges this by providing special benefits (called pension) to help Veterans and widows of Veterans pay for medical and long-term care expenses. Qualification for these benefits is not dependent upon a condition related to military service, but rather on the fact that an individual served in a branch of the United States armed forces during a wartime period. These benefits are subject to income and net worth limits, so understanding the rules and planning ahead are a must.
The second part of this presentation will address the importance of basic estate planning and provide important information regarding how you should prepare to face issues surrounding incapacity and death, specifically including what you can do to protect your privacy in this digital age. As with anything else, it is much better to be proactive in your planning.
Advances in technology provide more opportunities but also more challenges for attorneys trying to provide the best information, advice, and service to their clients. There is a myriad of information available on the internet which helps people obtain quick answers to their questions. However, that information is not always reliable. Sometimes it is merely outdated; sometimes it is inaccurate. People seeking assistance in these areas of the law are overwhelmed with choices Should I prepare my own will or go to an attorney? Should I do a will or a trust? What will happen to my personal information when I pass? Unfortunately, it's easy to become confused. This presentation will remove the confusion and replace it with accurate information that can be used to make the important decisions necessary to protect yourself and your family.
Free and open to the public.
