In 1992, Beverly Monroe was sentenced to 20 years for a murder she did not commit. With the assistance of her daughter, Kathryn, who had gone to law school and become an attorney, Monroe later discovered that  the prosecution had withheld exculpatory evidence. In April 2002, a United States District Court judge granted Monroe??s habeas corpus petition and overturned her conviction, freeing her.

In 1982, Keith Allen Harward was convicted of a rape and murder in Newport News, Virginia. He was convicted primarily on the testimony of two forensic dentists who said that his teeth matched marks left on the rape victim. After the Virginia Supreme Court granted a writ of actual innocence, Harward was freed on April 8, 2016, after wrongly serving more than 33 years of a life sentence for a crime he did not commit.
