Join the W&M Higher Education Program in the School of Education as we host alumni and emeritus faculty who were among the first African Americans to join William & Mary as students and faculty. In conjunction with the university?s commemoration of 50 years of African Americans in Residence and the Lemon Project?s 2018 Symposium, the panel will explore the academic and personal experiences of these trailblazers, as well as the larger context of equity and inclusion in higher education.
Assistant Professor of Higher Education Dr. Stephanie Blackmon will moderate a panel of esteemed alumni and emeritus faculty:
- Lynn Briley ?71 is an educator who served as an English teacher, assistant principal and principal in Portsmouth Public Schools during a career that spanned 41 years. Ms. Briley continues to be an active member of the Portsmouth community through her work in the public schools, volunteering and fundraising efforts, and as a member of various community organizations.
- Janet Brown Strafer ?71, M.Ed. ?77 is a retired Department of the Army Civilian with 35 years of federal service in education and strategy and 22 years as a member of the Maryland Army National Guard. Before entering federal service, she was a teacher and guidance counselor in Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools.
- James M. Patton is professor emeritus of Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership and Special Education. Dr. Patton?s research, teaching and service specialties include cultural and critical studies in special education and leadership, disproportionality in special and gifted education, and program evaluation.
- Brenda Williams is professor emeritus of Educational Policy, Planning and Leadership and Special Education. Dr. Williams? research interests include examination of the role and responsibilities of school leadership for the provision of educational services to students who are at-risk for school failure and identifying strategies for effective school-community relations.
