Dr. Rahel Fischbach will present part of her forthcoming book, Between God and History: Politics of Modern Muslim Qurʾānic Hermeneutics. Her lecture examines the relationship between history and the divine in recent feminist approaches to the Qurʾān, focusing on the politics of its creation narrative. In particular, she discusses the work of German Islamic theologian Dina El Omari who recently devised a holistic hermeneutic model for analyzing gender-related verses. Deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and literary-historical studies, El Omari theorizes a “new view of the text,” which she considers key in answering core theological and methodological questions raised by previous female-centric Qurʾānic Studies.
