Join us for the opening reception and curator’s talk for the special exhibit “Chinese Dance: National Movements in a Revolutionary Age, 1945-1965,” on display at the Stryker Center January 13-February 17, 2023.
The talk will be given by Dr. Emily Wilcox, Associate Professor and Director of Chinese Studies at William & Mary and author of Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy (University of California Press, 2018). Dr. Wilcox will speak about the creation of the exhibit and her fifteen years of experience studying Chinese dance and conducting field research with dancers in China. She will discuss rare archival materials featured in the exhibit and the process of creating the first library collection dedicated to Chinese dance in North America. Food and drink will be provided, and live demonstrations of Chinese dance will be given by guest performers. Free and open to the public.
The exhibit explores the history of Chinese dance through images and text co-curated by William & Mary professor Dr. Emily Wilcox and University of Michigan Chinese Studies Librarian Dr. Liangyu Fu. The exhibit features rare archival materials drawn from the University of Michigan Library Chinese Dance Collection, including photographs, performance programs, and media reports documenting diverse stories about how dance embodies cultural traditions and engages social change. This exhibit is presented with support from the University of Michigan Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, the William & Mary Arts & Sciences Faculty Grants Fund, and the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations’ Public Intellectuals Program, which is generously funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York.
