[PAST EVENT] "Part of Everyone's Meat and Drink: Music and Civil War America"
September 12, 2012
7:30pm
Location
Williamsburg Library Theatre
McWhirter will point out that because literacy among Americans was still limited, music was an important vehicle for communicating ideas about the war, and it had a lasting impact in the decades that followed. Drawing on an array of published and archival sources, McWhirter will analyze the myriad ways that music influenced popular culture in the years surrounding the war. By gauging the popularity of the most prominent songs and examining how Americans used them, McWhirter will paint a portrait of a war fought to music.
