[PAST EVENT] 20th Century Mexican Philosophy: A Binational Symposium
April 11, 2014 - April 12, 2014
1pm - 6pm
On the eve of the Mexican Revolution (1908), a small group of young intellectuals convened to criticize Comtean and Spencerian positivism, the ideological basis of Porfirio Diaz's thirty-year dictatorship, and to initiate a spiritual reform of Mexican society. And while it remains unclear whether the cultural and intellectual revolt of the Ateneo de la Juventud ("Athenaeum of Youth" as the group called itself) was partially responsible for the Revolution, or simply ran parallel, this meeting of young minds in many ways marks the twin discovery of Mexico and its own national philosophy.
The aim of our symposium is to consider how best to introduce several major Mexican philosophers in the US; to discuss the possibility and significance of a characteristically Mexican philosophy; to identify what is distinctly philosophical in well-known works of Mexican literature (such as Octavio Paz's The Labyrinth of Solitude); and to make a case for the value of reading Mexican philosophy in the US today.
