The career of John Boswell '69 was marked by groundbreaking research and a dedication to teaching. To honor this legacy, the College has created a permanent endowment for the John Boswell Memorial Lecture Series.

The lecture series was established by the William & Mary Gay and Lesbian Alumni/ae Association (WMGALA) and members of the Boswell Family in 1997. Since then, it has brought scholars influenced by Boswell's life and work to speak at events open to both the College community and general public.

As the Boswell Initiative gains support and momentum, Arts & Sciences hopes to establish the John Boswell Distinguished Chair for the study of sexual orientation and gender identities. This visiting professorship would bring to campus a variety of distinguished scholars in history, sociology, religion, government, English, or other disciplines, with a focus on the impact of "sexual orientation and gender identities" within that particular discipline.
