Each year, the President?s Office and the Office of Government Relations sponsor a trip to Richmond during the legislative session, during which students have the opportunity to talk with members of the Virginia General Assembly, their staff and representatives of the Governor?s Office.

This outing serves as a valuable experience in making connections, getting more involved in state politics, and talking to elected officials about the issues that truly matter to college students such as government funding, mental health concerns, campus climate, among others. You can serve as vital advocates on these and other important issues.

The fun begins the afternoon of Tuesday, January 16th, with a chartered bus ride up to Richmond, followed by a quick overview of the layout of Capital Square and what is on tap for the day. You may also hear from legislators or members of the Governor?s staff. Students will then divide up into groups and personally contact a group of legislators to discuss the university?s legislative stance and goals, as well as the issues students feel deserve attention. You will also have the opportunity to attend any committee meetings happening that afternoon.

Afterwards, you are invited to attend W&M?s annual reception (5:30-7pm) at the Library of Virginia with Virginia state senators and delegates and their staffs, members of the Governor?s team, W&M board members, administrators and others.

Student participants will depart by bus from campus at around 12:00 pm and leave the evening reception at around 7:00pm. Specifics on pickup and drop off locations to come.

Michael Fox, Chief of Staff to the President and Secretary to the Board will host an informal meeting the evening of Monday, January 15th, to talk with students before the trip. More details about precise meeting times and places will be emailed to participants.

This event is open to any W&M student, regardless of major or year, and also serves as a great way to network and learn about a crucial aspect of American politics.
