Data Science and the Dawn of Artificial Intelligence: How Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science are Reshaping Our Lives

Jesse Spencer-Smith

Chief Data Scientist, Data Science Institute, Vanderbilt University

ABSTRACT

New developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are providing new tools that enhance our work, our play, and our creative expression. These AI tools ease our daily lives--driving our cars, securing our data, answering our questions, solving our problems. The AI age is also likely to change what it means to be human in a radically new and transformative way. Most human jobs may not be automated or done remotely, but augmented by algorithms. As AI accelerates, so too does its ability to turn human beings into the things we were always meant to be: creative, intelligent, and human. AI promises to be an enormous social, cultural, and technological transformation of the human species. We'll explore how this revolution came about, how it is changing your life in ways both seen and unseen, and what comes next.
