[PAST EVENT] Counseling Center's Response to the Tragedy in Orlando
June 12, 2016 - September 1, 2016
The staff at the Counseling Center joins the rest of the William and Mary community in shock and disbelief over the tragic event at Pulse Orlando Night Club. We extend our sympathy and condolences to the families, loved ones, and friends of those directly affected by the injury and loss of so many lives. All those injured, physically and/or emotionally, are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
We express particular concern and support for the communities most likely impacted, including the LGBTQ, Latino/a communities, as well as those who identify as Muslim as they often face bias and discrimination based on negative stereotypes following such horrific acts of violence.
We are aware that people don?t need to personally know a victim or live in or near Orlando to be impacted by this tragedy. It is normal to experience anger, fear, sadness, despair, anxiety or any mix of these and other emotions in the aftermath of sickening and senseless violent attacks such as the one our nation recently experienced. We encourage people to reach out to family, friends, and significant others for support, engage in self-care, and utilize constructive ways of managing emotions.
The Counseling Center is here to support the William and Mary community. We offer a safe and confidential place for students to process the thoughts, feelings, and reactions related to this event; consulting with a professional may be particularly helpful for students who find themselves experiencing persistent feelings of distress or hopelessness. Students can contact us at 221-3620 or come in to Blow 240, to talk to one of our therapists. We are here to offer our support.
