Delivered from the Deep: Using xenoliths to reveal lower lithosphere deformation
Brief description:
Volcanic xenoliths – rocks torn, grabbed, and carried up from great depths by magma during volcanic eruptions -- are our only direct window into the lower crust and upper mantle. Unlike the typical exhumation of deep rocks, these rocks come up to the surface in the geologic blink of any eye (hours), faithfully preserving their in situ physical and chemical characteristics. Young xenoliths (a few million years old or less) in particular allow us to study the deformation processes at play in regions of active deformation, helping to constrain and inform geophysical observations.
