Dr. Juan Carlos de Obeso from the Department of Geology & Geophysics at the University of Utah will be giving a seminar on ophiolites!

Talk title: Sparkling water and peridotite: Serpentinization and carbonation in the mantle wedge

Brief description:

How carbon transfer from the slab interacts with the mantle during subduction is an important component of the global carbon cycle. Samples from Oman Drilling Project Hole BT1B, drilled at the base of the Samail ophiolite, provide a record of these interactions between fluids rich in carbon dioxide with mantle rocks. These interactions lead to the formation of listvenites, rocks composed mainly of magnesite and quartz. During this talk I will describe the formation processes of listvenites in the Oman ophiolite and characterize the source and nature of the fluid that pervasively transform the mantle rocks that now store vast amounts of carbon dioxide and its implications in the global carbon cycle and potential implications for carbon capture and storage.

Hope to see you at seminar next week!
