Hadiya (24) converted to Islam to marry a Muslim in 2016.  A year later, the Kerala High Court annulled their marriage and ruled that their marriage is invalid on the basis of ?love jihad?. The term love jihad was introduced in India by far-right Hindu groups. Between incidents of murder, conversion and marriage involving Muslim boys and Hindu girls, the term Love Jihad is part of everyday life in contemporary India in its new ultra-nationalist incarnation. Writings on love jihad (Sarkar 2001, Gupta 2009) focus more on the role of religion, conversion politics, and the history of right-wing Hinduism in India. This talk will not focus on these debates, but instead bring in a new radical perspective on the relationship of love jihad and the institution of marriage.
Dr. Sathiamma joined the University of Virginia in 2016 to teach in the Global Development Studies track which is an interdisciplinary program focusing on development debates and categories such as social justice and sustainable development. Her first book, State Without Honour (Oxford University Press, 2017), explores the political economy of women?s work in India.
