[PAST EVENT] The UN and Regional Nuclear Nonproliferation
Access & Features
- Open to the public
- Registration/RSVP
Regional nuclear-weapon-free zones have been a staple of nonproliferation efforts since the mid-1950s. Over the past 60 years, eight regions have been denuclearized under international law. To date, these agreements cover roughly 120 countries, most of the southern hemisphere, and close to two billion people.
Why do regions seek to ban nuclear weapons? What challenges do they face? What role can the United Nations play? And where will success come next? Please join the Global Research Institute for a conversation around these topics with Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs. The event will take place at Tucker Theater on Friday, April 26 from 5 pm to 6 pm. RSVPs requested.
