[PAST EVENT] Memorializing A Labored Legacy: William and Mary
November 11, 2014
5pm - 7pm
When taking a walk around the William and Mary campus, visitors, students, faculty, and staff see memorials--statues, plaques, buildings, trees, walkways--commemorating the individuals, groups, organizations, etc. that have contributed to the College's history. Those aware of that history must wonder, Where is the recognition and appreciation of the Africans and African Americans who toiled on the campus--the people who built and maintained the institution from its inception in 1693 through the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965....[The] labor of [black men, women, and children] made a clean, warm, and comfortable life for the students and faculty who lived and worked at William and Mary. It would not have been the same place without them.
