[PAST EVENT] What Goes Without Saying: Navigating Political Discussion in America, Jaime Settle & Taylor Carlson
Access & Features
- Open to the public
In their recent book, Dr. Jaime Settle and Dr. Taylor Carlson discuss why people dislike political conversations. Their book highlights a fundamental tension in modern American politics. The fabric holding us together is comprised of the interactions we have with others in our daily life. The effort to maintain this social fabric—to nurture and retain relationships with our family, our friends, and our colleagues, and to preserve our esteem in their eyes—may in fact undermine our ability to communicate genuinely and effectively across political divides. To hear them discuss this more, come out to the upcoming book talk.
Dr. Jaime Settle is an Associate Professor of Government at W&M, the director of the SNAPP Lab, and co-director of the SSRMC. She also serves as Associate Chair of the Data Science Program. Dr. Taylor Carlson, a 2014 graduate of William & Mary, began collaborating with Professor Settle when Dr. Carlson was still a student. She is now an Assistant Professor at Washington University, St. Louis.
The talk will be followed by light refreshments in the Chancellors Hall foyer.
