The Schroeder Center for Health Policy and the Boehly Center for Finance are partnering on a new 1-credit course for W&M undergraduates called "Private and Public Insurance for Long-term Care." It will be offered in Spring 2020. Course instructors Jennifer Mellor and Carl Tack hope to attract interested students from public policy and finance, as well as economics, government, health sciences, pre-med, and sociology.

The course will deal with a financial concern affecting millions of Americans turning age 65 and their families - the question of how best to finance the long-term care (LTC) they are likely to need later in life, care that could cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Few Americans have adequate financial plans for LTC. As a result, Medicaid, the largest public insurance program in the US, pays for the bulk of LTC costs at a considerable strain to state and federal budgets.

This one-credit course will examine how private insurance markets and public programs and policies currently finance long-term care, and what opportunities exist for improving the functioning of private markets and reducing burdens on public programs. Students will hear from a range of guest speakers with expertise on the private LTC insurance industry, Medicaid financing and cost-containment approaches, and single-payer coverage options that include LTC.

Class dates are Jan 24 (3:30-6pm), Jan 25 (9am-2pm), and Feb 1 (9am-2pm) with lunch served on Jan 25 and Feb 1.
