Maggie Lee Ingram is the "Gospel Queen" of Richmond, Virginia. Described by the director of the Virginia Folklife Program as "a true national treasure," she has delighted audiences for more than 50 years. Born Maggie Dixon in Douglas, Georgia, she moved to Florida and formed a gospel group with her children to enhance the sermons of her minister-husband. Other Florida churches soon began to invite the family to perform. Sister Maggie moved her family to Richmond in 1961, and the ensemble went professional, signing their first recording contract in 1964. In the 1970s they began a prison ministry, partnering with the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Sister Maggie has performed at the Kennedy Center and at the National Folklife Festival. In 2009 she received the Virginia Heritage Award for a lifetime of excellence in the folk and traditional arts; the Ingramettes' most recent album was nominated for Independent Music Awards Best Gospel Album of 2013.
