The impact of the Civil War on the lives of Southern women was profound, but differed depending on individuals' class and ethnicity. Professor Bailey examines how some women turned pre-War musical "accomplishment" into income, and investigates how three generations of women from different classes and ethnic backgrounds used music to help them adapt to changed cultural and social conditions.
