[PAST EVENT] Film and Discussion: Jeffrey Van Davis: "Only a God Can Save Us Now"
October 22, 2014
5pm - 7pm
Martin Heidegger is regarded as one of the most original and important thinkers of the 20th century, yet his legacy is tainted first by his collaboration with the Nazi regime by becoming the Rector of the University of Freiburg, secondly by his treatment of his mentor Edmund Husserl, who was Jewish, and finally by his failure, even late in life, to assume any responsibility for his anti-Semitic statements and his blithe identification of the murder of Jews at Auschwitz with technological food-processing. This all begs the question: how could such a brilliant thinker hold such noxious beliefs and attitudes? How can such insight coexist with such blindness?
