Abstract: In this colloquium I will describe the search using neutrinos for the proof that matter is accelerated in the powerful galactic and extra-galactic accelerators such as supernova remnants and black holes. These sources are suspected to produce the cosmic rays hitting our atmosphere but the evidence is still to come. Neutrinos would provide a smoking gun to show that proton and nucleus acceleration is active in such sources and not only electro-magnetic processes. I will show where results stand at the moment, and what are successes and struggles of the Cherenkov neutrino telescope technique focusing on IceCube results.
