[PAST EVENT] Kenneth Feinberg: "Unconventional Compensation Responses to Unique Catastrophes"
September 11th Victims Compensation Fund Special Master Kenneth Feinberg, subject of the recent Netflix film, “Worth,” in which Mr. Feinberg was portrayed by Michael Keaton, will speak to members of the William & Mary community on Monday, March 21st at 1:00 PM on the subject of "Unconventional Compensation Responses to Unique Catastrophes: Tailoring the Law to Meet the Challenges." Attendance is limited to William & Mary students, faculty and staff.
After September 11th, there was great concern not only about how to compensate the victims of the attacks but also how to avoid destruction of the U.S. airline industry as a result of lawsuits. Congress created a special compensation fund for those willing to give up their right to sue. The problem, however, was how to decide what each victim should receive. Famous lawyer and mediator Kenneth Feinberg took on that responsibility, at no compensation, having to determine, as he wrote in his later book, What is Life Worth? Following that, he performed similar duties, pro bono, after the shootings at Virginia Tech and the Boston Marathon bombing. In 2009, he was appointed by the Treasury to oversee executive compensation for companies that received federal assistance during the Recession. He assisted in the settlements of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Penn State sexual abuse cases, the 2012 Aurora, Colorado shootings, and other matters.
Mr. Feinberg will speak by Zoom.
