Interested in helping students with their writing and communication skills? Apply to work as a paid writing center consultant!
Writing Resources Center consultants are trained peer tutors who work with students in 50-minute consultations on writing and presentation skills. Consultants come from across the disciplines, majoring in Chemistry, Economics, English, Government, Hispanic Studies, History, Kinesiology, Math, Psychology, and more.
In Fall 2021, the application process begins October 15, and completed applications are due November 23. The application includes a personal statement (no more than 2 pages double-spaced); an academic writing sample, a draft of the applicant’s spring schedule, and a faculty recommendation. This information should be submitted online (click More Information to view the links).
Selected applicants will be interviewed during the first week of exams. Those accepted into the trainee cohort will be given permission to enroll in WRIT 399, a two-credit class offered each spring on Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-1. The course is an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of writing center work and includes opportunities to observe and practice consulting. Trainees who complete the course will become paid peer consultants in Fall 2022.
Strong applicants are those who work well with peers; show initiative and motivation; and demonstrate ability in written and oral communication. Freshmen and sophomore applicants are given priority, but juniors are also encouraged to apply. All consultants are expected to maintain a 3.0 GPA and attend staff meetings on alternate Mondays from 12-1pm. A complete job description is available on the WRC website.
