Join the Center for Student Diversity as we welcome Mrs. Nell Draper-Winston, sister of 20th century photographer and cultural groundbreaker, Louis Draper.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Louis Draper moved to Harlem in 1958 where he was a founding member of Kamoinge, the seminal black photographer's collective which, among other goals, sought "to create the kind of images of our communities that spoke the truth we'd witnessed and that countered the untruths we'd all seen in mainline publications." Notable contemporaries photographed by Draper include Langston Hughes, Hughie Lee Smith, Miles Davis, Malcolm X, Katherine Dunham, and the civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer.
