Join Jamestown Rediscovery Public Historian Mark Summers as he situates the commemoration of Jamestown within the civil rights struggle to acknowledge black history. He will discuss how Jamestown became something of a Confederate “Lost Cause” shrine in the 19th century. As such African-American history was ignored and African-American visitors were denied admission to the park during the early 20th century. Yet African-Americans told their own story of their arrival in Virginia through exhibitions, sculpture, poetry, and protest.
