Join William & Mary’s Global Research Institute for the launch of The Origins of the Contemporary Global Order: From the Nineteenth Century to the Cold War (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024) by former W&M Dean of Faculty Carl Strikwerda. A presentation and Q&A will take place on March 20, 2025, at 5:30 pm in The Hive Event Space (G30, ground floor of Swem Library). A light reception will follow immediately after the event on the Conservation Patio.

Dr. Strikwerda received his Ph.D. in European History from the University of Michigan. He has had an illustrious career in academia, including serving as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at William & Mary and later as the fourteenth president of Elizabethtown College. He recently published his book, The Origins of the Contemporary Global Order: From the Nineteenth Century to the Cold War, which offers a new interpretation of the origins of the contemporary global order.

Previous interpretations have argued that the USA played the predominant role in creating the global order to fight the Cold War against the Soviet Union. Dr. Strikwerda argues that a broader perspective is necessary to understand both the origins of the global order, and its ongoing tensions up until today, a perspective that includes the legacy of both world wars, the role of imperialism, and the alternative strategy of globally oriented economic blocs. The cooperative tradition in the founding of the global order and the contributions of nations besides the USA provide useful insights for those interested in the current global order and the challenges it faces from Russia and China.
