J. Gerald Kennedy is Boyd Professor of English at Louisiana State University and former chair of the English Department. He is the author or editor of fifteen books, including most recently Strange Nation: Literary Nationalism and Cultural Conflict in the Age of Poe (Oxford UP, 2016), about which Michael Lindgren in The Washington Post wrote: “Anyone who is puzzled by the rise of a certain orange-haired politician would find the phenomenon perfectly understandable after reading Kennedy’s book, with its observation that ‘nationalism excites greatest vehemence when it is most uncertain of itself.’”
