[PAST EVENT] A Place in History: Should Virginia Ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution?

In the past few years, there has been a renewed activism effort to spur the final three states to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Nevada passed it in 2017; then, in May of this year, Illinois became the 37th state to ratify the Amendment. Virginia is poised to become the 38th and final state needed for ratification.
Supporters from across the nation have turned their sights on Virginia and the 2019 legislative session with attention to the movement for Virginia to cast the deciding vote for equal rights for women and men.
This symposium, the brainchild of Virginia Equal Rights Coalition President Julia Tanner, will be hosted by the law school's American Constitution Society, Women's Law Society, Institute of Bill of Rights Law, and Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice student organizations, and will explore the legal questions posed by the Equal Rights Amendment proposal, including its necessity and remaining legislative obstacles. Legal experts from around the country, as well as at William & Mary Law School, are expected to present. In addition, Delegate Jennifer Carroll Foy will deliver a keynote regarding ratification and next steps for Virginia.
