Dr. Michael L. Blakey is the featured speaker at the NY Academy of Science's annual archaeology lecture, this year conducted via Zoom on Mon. Feb. 22 at 6:30pm. He will discuss "African Diasporic Activist Scholarship: Beyond the Enlightenment, Toward the Democratization of Science," focusing on the NY African Burial Ground as a watershed of a new form of archaeology and historic interpretation as this national monument marks its 30th anniversary. Dr. Blakey, National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Anthropology, Africana Studies and American Studies, was Scientific Director of the New York African Burial Ground Project (1992-2009), the most extensive bio-archaeological project in the United States. The Manhattan site became a U.S. National Monument in 2007.
