[PAST EVENT] Workshop-Frame and Fine-tune Your COLL 100/150 Course

Together, COLL 100 and COLL 150 courses introduce methods of scholarly research and lay the foundation for first-year students' communication skills. COLL 100 focuses on “Big Ideas” and gives students opportunities to communicate these ideas in media other than the academic paper (for example: oral presentations; performances; visual, quantitative, digital, or other projects). COLL 150 asks students to delve deeply into a focused topic and provides opportunities to practice their writing skills. Both courses help students make the transition to college-level academic discourse at W&M.
Workshop Objectives:
In 90-minute sessions over three days, participants will focus on key aspects of these courses (morning sessions), then have several hours to experiment and develop ideas, then reconvene (optional afternoon sessions) to "kick the tires" with colleagues and exchange feedback.
Day 1| Context, Concepts, Content: Frame Your COLL 100/150 Course
COLL 100/150 courses are unique in the undergraduate curriculum. Where do they fit? What expectations do they carry? How can the pieces come together in a great course you love to teach?
Day 2 | Roadmap for Meeting Course Goals: Your Syllabus
Consider the syllabus as a guiding document that explains to students how the course will unfold to meet your teaching goals.
Day 3 | Purpose, Expectations, Assessment: Your Assignments
How you construct, communicate, and integrate assignments can help meet your teaching goals. Consider how "transparent design" can clarify the purpose and value of your assignments.
