Teaching & Learning Talk | Public Exams — Deeper Cognition with Less Stress
Thursday, October 21, 2021 // 12 - 1:30 pm
Location: Hybrid - G64 [Swem Library, ground floor near the Print Shop] or Zoom
Join us for the second Teaching & Learning Talk facilitated by Dr. Ben Wiggins from the University of Washington. Instructors and students agree that exams are a challenging and problematic mixture of best intentions, complex content, and a range of sometimes competing goals. Using best practices from education literature, we’ve been reformulating summation exams in a style that we call ‘public exams’. Our research has shown that the student experience within public exam courses is significantly positive and that the benefits are found especially in deeper thinking, more efficient studying, and in helping students to perform best under anxiety-inducing pressure. For anyone that gives, takes or thinks critically about exams.
Boxed lunches will be provided for in-person participants. To ensure adequate time for catering, boxed lunch selections must be made by Monday, October 18.
