William & Mary’s January program in Oman will consist of a two-week study tour. This year's program will use Muscat as a base and travel out to Ibri and a desert camp, exploring the variety of geography and culture that Oman has to offer. The program will tour through the rugged Al Hajar Mountains, explore the vast dunes of the Sharqiya Sands, listen to local musicians, and visit the scenic Indian Ocean coastline. Housing (in modest hotels), transportation (by bus), and meals are included in the program fee.
Oman is a country located at the eastern edge of the Arabian Peninsula on the Indian Ocean. Oman is among the most developed and stable countries in the Arab world with a long history of partnership with the United States. The desert landscape and sweeping coastline form an ideal setting for studying geology and the environment. Oman has been a maritime crossroads between South and Southeast Asia, East Africa, and the Mediterranean and Arab World for centuries and Omanis have a rich distinctive culture and a vibrant traditional arts scene that reflects long time and ongoing interactions across the desert and around the Indian Ocean.
