September 18 to September 24, 2022 is Banned Books Week which celebrates the freedom to read. Especially with ongoing national controversies over the censorship of books in libraries and schools, both of our organizations recognize the importance of seeking and expressing ideas even if they are nonconformist.

AASI and PLUMAS will be forming a Banned Book Club, reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, which has been censored in many school curriculums due to sensitive subject matters like domestic violence, puberty, sexual harassment, and racism. If you are interested in reading the novel (103 pages, told through forty-four vignettes) and discussing it in a Banned Book Club, please fill out https://forms.gle/N3aLjPGZKYFGLiFG8! The Banned Book Club will feature free snacks and lively discussion on whether the school banning was justified, the nature of the material/themes, and more. We will add you to a group chat where you can also discuss the novel—spoiler-free—and receive other updates prior to the book club date!

1. Now to Tuesday, October 18: Reading Period of the Novel

Thursday, October 13 to Sunday, October 16 is also Fall Break which should provide ample reading time!

2. Tuesday, October 18 from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM: The Banned Book Club ft. snacks, discussion, and debate
